SIGMMA is a project proposal that was submitted to the European Commission H2020 call ICT-39- 2016-2017 (International partnership building in low and middle income countries) with a deadline on April 25, 2017. This competitive funding offers up to 2 million euros per granted proposal to drive a pilot demonstrating the use of technology to address a specific societal challenge in developing countries.
Introduction
SIGMMA aims at contributing to facilitate financial inclusion in sub-Saharan Africa. Concretely, to achieve this goal we propose an approach to shift from the largely adopted SMS/USSD-based mobile money to a more transparent, interoperable, secure, global and rich Mobile Money Infrastructure. Our proposal implements, in the African context, a pilot framework which includes new technology based on blockchain as well as new regulatory implementations. SIGMMA brings together different stakeholders, with different perspectives (technical, economical, societal), which will explore the rapid expansion of smartphones and cellular data networks such as 3G in Africa to enable the realization of longstanding opportunities for novel services on top of an open Mobile Money initiative.
